Position summary

The US Communications Manager helps to develop and implement communications strategies to maximize the impact of Guttmacher’s US-focused research and policy portfolios. This position plays a key role in our US media relations and rapid response efforts, proactively developing relationships with reporters and editors; helping to develop and pitch story ideas; ensuring effective fielding of media inquiries; assisting with expert interviews; serving as spokesperson on background as appropriate; and helping to supervise the production of daily media clips. In collaboration with senior Communications staff as well as the Policy and Research teams, this position helps to conceptualize and draft press materials, assists with developing and shaping messages for a range of written products, and otherwise assists with outreach to key constituents including through work with communications partners and coalitions. The ideal candidate brings initiative, curiosity and passion alongside a well-rounded communications and media relations skill set. 

  • Is a key member of the Institute’s US communications team managing communications and media relations across Guttmacher’s US-focused research, state policy and federal policy portfolios.
  • Helps to develop and implement communications strategies, designed to achieve the fullest possible impact of the Institute’s major domestic program areas.
  • Plays a critical role in Guttmacher’s US media relations efforts, including proactive media outreach and pitching story ideas and op-eds; ensuring effective fielding of media inquiries; and coordinating interviews with Institute experts, interview prep and staffing as needed.
  • Works with senior communications staff to develop dissemination plans and produce collateral materials for a broad range of key audiences.
  • Engages with reporters on background and helps position Guttmacher and its experts as a trusted and reliable resource for media organizations.
  • Helps oversee the production of curated daily media clips by other staff to capture use of Guttmacher quotes and data, identify key media coverage on relevant issues, and enable Institute staff to easily stay on top of current news.
  • In close collaboration with other team members assists with opportunistically initiating and executing cross-divisional rapid response efforts.
  • Assists with conceptualizing and drafting content in various formats, including press releases, op-eds, notes to reporters, social media content and other materials as needed. 
  • Occasionally supports project management activities.
  • Works with other staff to track the reach and impact of our communications and media relations efforts.
  • Backs up other teams, including the digital and global communications teams, as needed.
  • Helps to identify ongoing opportunities, such as breaking news stories, relevant advocacy and awareness days, conferences and other events, to promote Guttmacher’s domestic work.
  • Represents the Institute at relevant coalition meetings and conferences.
  • Performs other job-related tasks and projects as assigned.
Qualifications and skills  

The ideal candidate is a versatile communications professional who is ready to take the next step in their career, bringing a well-rounded communications and media relations skill set, strong writing skills, and the initiative and flexibility necessary to succeed in a fast-paced and demanding position.

  • 3-5 years of relevant work experience
  • Excellent communications skills and proven ability to write for different formats, platforms and audiences.
  • Proven track-record of communicating effectively to a range of audiences.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a team
  • Ability to work under deadlines, handle changing priorities as needed, and juggle priorities and projects
  • Familiarity with US debates and media landscape around abortion, contraception and other key sexual and reproductive health issues a plus
  • Familiarity with using social media platforms for professional purposes a plus
  • Spanish language skills a plus
  • Committed to ongoing learning and professional development
  • Proficiency with common information technology platforms like Microsoft and Google suites, Mail Chimp and Drupal, and ability to quickly become fluent with other systems. 
  • Occasional domestic travel  
Salary and benefits  

Salary starting at $69,000 to $80,000, commensurate with experience. Excellent benefits that include medical, dental, vision and life insurance; vacation, personal and sick time; paid parental leave; tuition reimbursement; commuting subsidy; and 401(k) with employer match.
