Sophia Chae joined the Guttmacher Institute as a Senior Research Scientist in 2015. She has conducted research on family structures and adolescent reproductive health in Sub-Saharan Africa. She is currently involved in projects examining the incidence of abortion in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the reasons and characteristics of women obtaining abortions worldwide. Prior to joining the Guttmacher Institute, Dr. Chae worked as a postdoctoral scholar at the Center for Population Dynamics at Arizona State University. She earned a BA in economics and international studies from Northwestern University, an MS in population and international health from the Harvard School of Public Health, and a PhD in demography from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Chae is a member of the Population Association of America, the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population and the Union for African Population Studies.
