Regions

Asia

The Guttmacher Institute’s work in Asia has focused primarily on estimating the incidence of abortion and unintended pregnancy, documenting the health consequences of unsafe abortion and the conditions under which it occurs, and assessing the quality of postabortion care and counseling. In addition, as part of larger global estimates, the Institute has estimated levels of and reasons for unmet need for modern contraception, as well as the costs and public health benefits of meeting women’s reproductive health needs. This work provides policymakers across the region with evidence to support greater investments in family planning services and maternal and newborn health care programs, improve the quality and accessibility of postabortion care, and help women achieve their preferences regarding timing and number of births.

Hear From An Expert

Abortion has been legal under broad criteria in India since 1971. Data on the national incidence of abortion, how and where women obtain services, and the quality of services are essential to ensure that every woman can receive the care she needs.
