Burkina Faso

The Guttmacher Institute’s work in Burkina Faso has focused on documenting the incidence of abortion and unintended pregnancy, the consequences of unsafe abortion and the conditions under which women have abortions; documenting adolescents’ access to sexual and reproductive health information and services; and promoting greater investments in family planning and sexual health services, particularly for adolescents and unmarried women.

Hear From An Expert

Family planning programs need to be strengthened so that all women can more easily plan the timing and spacing of their pregnancies. This will reduce levels of unintended pregnancy, and thereby the need for abortion. At the same time, improving access to high-quality postabortion care services, especially in rural areas, is critically needed to reduce maternal illness and death in Burkina Faso
