In collaboration with the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the Guttmacher-Lancet Commission on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights held an event in Geneva on May 21 during the 71st World Health Assembly. The program featured Michelle Bachelet, former President of Chile and vocal supporter of sexual and reproductive health and rights, as the keynote speaker, followed by a panel, moderated by Richard Horton, editor-in-chief of The Lancet, that featured Ankit Gupta, Women Deliver Young Leader and member of the Commission’s Advisory Group; Dr. Princess Nothemba (Nono) Simelela, Assistant Director-General for Family, Women, Children and Adolescents, WHO; Dereje Wordofa, the new Deputy Executive Director (Programmes), UNFPA; Anders Nordstrom, Ambassador for Global Health, Sweden; and Stéphanie Seydoux, the new French Ambassador for Global Health. The event was joined by Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO, who spoke in support of the Commission’s recommendations.
