The Guttmacher-Lancet Commission’s event with the Wilson Center’s Maternal Health Initiative focused on discussing the Commission’s report and its key recommendations, including the central idea that achieving sexual and reproductive health relies on realizing sexual and reproductive rights. Patricia Da Silva, Associate Director of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) United Nations Liaison Office, gave opening remarks at the event, as IPPF is an organizational member of the Commission’s Advisory Group. Ms. Da Silva’s presentation was followed by a panel discussion that explored the centrality of rights to making sexual and reproductive health a reality in people’s lives.

The panel featured Dr. Mabel Bianco, President and Founder of the Foundation for Studies and Research on Women; Felicity Daly, Global Research Program Coordinator for OutRight Action International; and Preston Mitchum, Co-Chair of the Youth Rights and Health Coalition and Senior Legal & International Policy Analyst at Advocates for Youth. The panel was moderated by Jill Filipovic, ASU Future of War Fellow at New America and contributing opinion writer to the New York Times.
