Insurance Coverage

Bans on public and private insurance coverage for abortion services create and exacerbate financial and logistical barriers that prevent many people, especially those in marginalized communities, from obtaining the care they need. The Guttmacher Institute’s resources document these harms and make the case for proactive legislation that ensures coverage for abortion along with the full spectrum of reproductive health care.

The Hyde Amendment is discriminatory—it exacerbates inequities in access to abortion by banning federally funded health insurance programs from covering abortion care. That’s why policymakers must enact proactive policies that ensure coverage for abortion and the full spectrum of reproductive health care.
