The global gag rule could devastate SRHR around the world
Transcript: If you're a US taxpayer, you should know about the global gag rule.
It's a US policy championed by Donald Trump and other anti-abortion politicians that uses US foreign aid, your taxpayer dollars, to undermine abortion rights and reproductive health around the world.
Here's how it works. Any organization outside the US that receives even $1 in US global health assistance is prohibited from using its own money that it raised from other sources for anything related to abortion. That means they cannot provide abortions, inform patients that abortion is an option, or even try to change their country's abortion laws. The global gag rule applies even in countries where abortion is already legal. That's why it's called a "gag rule." It effectively silences all discussions about abortion.
There is no evidence that this policy has ever improved anyone's health or well-being. In fact, it has caused significant harm, not just by restricting abortion access, but also by curtailing access to other areas of reproductive health care. In countries like Ethiopia and Uganda, for example, the global gag rule has made it more difficult to access birth control. That's because you can't restrict abortion without impacting other areas of reproductive health.
US taxpayer dollars shouldn't jeopardize abortion rights in other countries or obstruct access to essential reproductive health care for the people there. Exporting anti-abortion US policies around the world is wrong, but that's what anti-abortion politicians like Donald Trump and J.D. Vance want.
