On Thursday, June 16, the U.S. House of Representatives voted 233-192 to sustain the president’s decision to block a U.S. contribution to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). Since 2002, President Bush has barred all U.S. funding to UNFPA on the grounds that the organization supports coercive abortion and sterilization in China.
The Bush Administration’s own investigative team found no evidence to support this claim; nor did multiple other official and governmental delegations from other donor countries who visited UNFPA’s programs in China. UNFPA operates in over 150 poor countries around the world, but does not provide or pay for abortion services anywhere in the world. Instead, UNFPA works to reduce the need for abortion by promoting voluntary family planning.
