Bangladesh

The Guttmacher Institute’s work in Bangladesh has focused on estimating the incidence and health consequences of unsafe abortion; estimating levels of unintended pregnancy; and estimating the incidence of menstrual regulation, a procedure to establish nonpregnancy after a missed period using medication or manual vacuum aspiration. The Institute has also carried out research on the quality of menstrual regulation and postabortion care services in Bangladesh that has identified key barriers to care.

Hear From An Expert

Bangladesh is unique in that the government includes menstrual regulation (MR) services in its family planning program, but unsafe abortions remain common. Making MR services and contraceptive care more widely accessible would significantly reduce unintended pregnancy and unsafe abortion rates.
