Low- and middle-income countries, by region and subregion

The Adding It Up 2024 study produced estimates for 128 countries classified by the World Bank as low- or middle-income countries (LMICs) on the basis of having a 2023 per capita gross national income (GNI) of US$14,005 or less. The same set of countries is used for estimates in the Family Planning Impact Investment Calculator.

The Safe Abortion Calculator provides estimates for 117 LMICs, a subset of the 128 countries in the Adding It Up 2024 study that excludes Eastern Asia and Europe, where fewer than 25% of all abortions are unsafe (Ganatra et al., 2017).

The following countries were excluded from the Adding It Up study because they did not have United Nations (UN) population or birth data: Dominica, Marshall Islands and Tuvalu. In addition, following UN World Population Prospects classifications, Kosovo was combined with Serbia for all calculations.

Africa
