At the International Population Conference, Guttmacher shared new research on family planning’s economic impact, global contraceptive access losses and innovative studies expanding safe abortion care in Ethiopia.
Guttmacher presents the latest research at IPC2025
Transcript: What are some of the latest research studies coming out of Guttmacher? Here's what we shared at the International Population Conference this year.
Family planning catalyzes tremendous benefits for women, families and societies, but historically, some of these outcomes have been difficult to quantify. The FP Impact Consortium used innovative modeling approaches to generate new scientific evidence to measure one of the less tangible outcomes— the economic effects of family planning for women in low- and middle-income countries. Investments in family planning deliver concrete economic payoffs.
With sexual and reproductive health and rights under threat from restrictive policies and funding cuts around the world, our experts provided essential data to inform solutions and support advocacy efforts. We estimate that as of this week at the International Population Conference, over 22 million women and girls in low- and middle-income countries will have lost access to contraception due to US funding cuts. That is just one country and it is part of a growing rollback of support for sexual reproductive health and rights around the world. Some of our researchers shared what we're learning from studies with partners different countries. In Ethiopia, we worked with the St. Paul Institute for Reproductive Health and Rights.
I just presented some research on provision of medication abortion in pharmacies and drugstores in Addis Ababa in Ethiopia. These were findings from a mystery client study. We think that pharmacies and drugstores can be a great point of provision for medication abortion in Ethiopia. A great way to expand access to safe abortion care. So we were really excited to present these results here.
Through presentations, workshops and collaborative engagements at our booth, our experts shared evidence and sparked meaningful conversations to inform policy decisions and drive the solutions needed to advance SRHR worldwide.
