Destiny Lopez (Co-President and CEO) emphasizes that medication abortion now accounts for the majority of US abortions, urges envisioning a future where people can access abortion care in the way and place they choose and calls for bold thinking beyond fear and uncertainty.
Destiny Lopez on the status & future of medication abortion in the US at #CSW69
Transcript: Our most recent data here in the US shows medication abortion accounts for about 63% of clinician-provided abortions and we know that that's an undercount, right? Because we know other additional forms of provision that are outside of the health care system. In more rural states in the US like Wyoming, our new data shows that 95% of abortions are with medication abortion. Ultimately, what we want is people to have the method of their choice, in the location of their choice. What I would challenge us to do is to use this moment when we can come out of our fear, when we can come out of our anxiety, when we can come out of our uncertainty and dream new worlds. And what are the worlds that we want to see? How do we want folks— how do we want to get care? How do the folks in our community want to get care? And we do have an opportunity, if we can see through the end of the tunnel and I believe there's a light at the end of the tunnel, to really conceive of how we want the provision of abortion care to happen in any context and for any person.
