Low- and middle-income countries, by region and subregion

The Adding It Up 2024 study produced estimates for 128 countries classified by the World Bank as low- or middle-income countries (LMICs) on the basis of having a 2023 per capita gross national income (GNI) of US$14,005 or less. The same set of countries is used for estimates in the Family Planning Impact Investment Calculator.

The following countries were excluded because they did not have United Nations (UN) population or birth data: Dominica, Marshall Islands and Tuvalu. In addition, following UN World Population Prospects classifications, Kosovo was combined with Serbia for all calculations.

Africa

  • Eastern Africa: Burundi, Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe
  • Middle Africa: Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Sao Tome and Principe
  • Northern Africa: Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Sudan, Tunisia
  • Southern Africa: Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa
  • Western Africa: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo

 

Asia

  • Central Asia: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan
