Kelly Baden (Vice President for Public Policy), warns that misinformation-driven policies threaten reproductive rights and highlights new research showing 155,000 people traveled for abortion care in 2024, urging evidence-based solutions like strengthening state shield laws to protect access.
Guttmacher expert Kelly Baden on evidence-informed policies advance reproductive freedom
Transcript: Misinformation is being weaponized to undermine reproductive rights across the United States. When policy is driven by ideology instead of evidence, the real-world consequences are dire. People's rights are taken away, and they lose access to critical health care. That's why the Guttmacher Institute is here.
Our rigorous social science research on abortion and contraception helps identify actionable policy solutions. We then work closely with partners across the country, including policymakers, to make sure they can better protect and expand access to care. We just released a report that highlights Guttmacher's latest findings and points to the policy solutions that that evidence calls for.
Data from our Monthly Abortion Provision Study, for example, shows that about 155,000 people traveled to obtain abortion care in 2024. But that travel decreased slightly in the first half of 2025. There are likely several reasons for this, including the incredible development of the provision of abortion under the protection of state shield laws. So we know that protecting and advancing shield laws at the state level is an urgent policy priority.
This is a very challenging moment for abortion rights and access, and the landscape is heavily tilted against us. But there are real opportunities to create change and help people get the care that they need. We're ready to turn data into action because sound policy starts with high-quality evidence.
With your support, we can ensure policymakers have the facts and tools they need. Explore the full report and all of our research at guttmacher.org.
