New data highlight the importance of medication abortion
Transcript: Medication abortion is a crucial part of abortion provision across the US but access to this safe and effective method is under attack. My name is Isabel Docampo and I'm a Senior Research Associate at Guttmacher as well as a researcher on our Monthly Abortion Provision Study. New data from this study show that medication abortion accounted for the majority of abortions provided in nearly all US states without total bans in 2023.
Proportions ranged from 95% in Wyoming to 44% in Washington, DC. This tells us that regardless of geography, people across the US rely on abortion pills to access essential reproductive health care. Anti-abortion lawmakers know this. That's why they're using all levers of government to attack abortion pills. So far in 2025, multiple states have introduced bills targeting medication abortion.
The facts are on our side. Decades of research show that medication abortion is safe, highly effective and as these new data emphasize, widely used by people around the country. With the anti-abortion movement continuing its full on assault against reproductive rights, it's critical that medication abortion remains accessible. Everyone deserves access to medication abortion or to their preferred method of abortion care, no matter where they live and no matter what.
