Irum Taqi has directed strategic efforts to advance comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) policies at the global and federal levels as Interim Director of Public Policy, Global and Federal Issues, since December 2022. She joined Guttmacher as Principal Advisor, Global Policy, in October 2021, overseeing the Institute’s engagement with key global and regional partners and equipping them with timely evidence and analyses to influence SRHR policy making.
Ms. Taqi has extensive experience in SRHR policy and advocacy, both globally and in the US. Prior to joining the Institute, Ms. Taqi led global initiatives at the United Nations for nine years to strengthen political support for SRHR, maternal and newborn health, and gender equality in the Global South, which resulted in policy change. Earlier in her career, she worked to reform SRHR laws and policies domestically at organizations including Physicians for Reproductive Health, the Center for Reproductive Rights and the New York Civil Liberties Union. Ms. Taqi built partnerships, developed organizational positions, lobbied policymakers and delivered expert testimony in support of legislative proposals to expand access to sexual and reproductive health care. She also previously served as Deputy General Counsel to the New York City Public Advocate.
Ms. Taqi received a JD from Fordham University School of Law and a BA from Vassar College.
