Position Summary:

The Controller works closely with the Director of Finance and the Finance team to ensure compliance with General Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

 

Responsibilities:

  • Perform various accounting functions with varying levels of complexity, including overseeing financial data collection to ensure accuracy and compliance to the Institute's policy and donor restrictions, posting journal entries, reconciling accounts, and creating special reports;
  • Review daily transactions related to US, foreign governments and assigned institutional funders to ensure the expenses incurred are per the various project budgets;
  • Supervise junior Accounting staff and evaluate the performance of personnel in the department and recommend training;
  • Act as primary liaison with various program managers/project leads to ensure fiscal compliance of the grants;
  • Collaborate with inter-divisional staff to  the prepare pre and post grant award project budgets;
  • Prepare  various year-end audit and tax schedules. 
  • Propose month-end entries related to revenue recognition, allocated costs, investment analysis, grants receivable, fixed asset depreciation, accruals, prepaid, other assets, other liabilities, and administrative expenses
  • Prepare monthly financials including Balance Sheet, Statement of Activities, Statement of functional expenses, and cash flows;
  • Perform monthly bank reconciliation for all bank accounts;
  • Prepare monthly entries for the investment portfolio, reconcile all investment accounts.
  • Prepare and review monthly project budgets using Unanet and MIP, flag budget concerns and propose resolution;
  • Develops, analyzes, and interprets statistical and accounting information to appraise operating results in terms of net assets available for benefits, performance against budget, and other matters bearing on the fiscal soundness and operating effectiveness of the organization.
  • Maintain grant schedules and assist on follow up of receivables;
  • Propose adjusting journal entries as needed;
  • Prepare financial reports to funders;
  • Ensure accurate compliance with the financial reporting calendar.
  • Explain and interpret financial trends and variances when applicable;
  • Maintain Chart of accounts, along with project and funder codes in MIP;
  • Perform other job-related responsibilities and special projects as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance required; MBA preferred; 
  • Minimum of seven years of relevant work experience, working in a nonprofit environment; 
  • Extensive experience and knowledge with GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles, practices, and regulations
  • Experience working with budgets, and grant accounting;
  • High proficiency with MS Excel, MS Word, and Windows-based financial reporting software;
  • Knowledge of MIP and prior audit experience is preferred;
  • Implementation of finance systems a plus
  • Self-motivated, ability to multi-task and work under pressure;
  • Team player with excellent time management skills and the ability to communicate well with all levels of internal staff and external vendors, funders, and partners;
  • Ability to actively engage successfully with all levels of staff and across all departments.
  • Ability to work independently and set priorities.
  • Ability to manage junior staff 
  • Exceptional analytical skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills

 

Salary and Benefits:

Starting salary at $127,222.48 to $202,000.00 commensurate with experience.
