HIV & STIs

The Guttmacher Institute’s international work on HIV and other STIs focuses on developing regions. Our research and advocacy efforts have focused on the linkages between HIV and sexual and reproductive health and rights, the impact of STIs on maternal and newborn health, the need for new technologies (including multipurpose prevention technologies) and U.S. support for global AIDS programs.

Hear From An Expert

The evidence strongly indicates that providing women with effective new tools to simultaneously prevent unwanted pregnancy as well as protect against STIs and HIV is essential. However, just developing these methods is not enough. They need to be designed and marketed in a way that meets the needs and respects the rights of women and their partners. Ultimately, multipurpose prevention technologies (MPTs) will be viable options only if women actually use them
