State Policies on Pregnancy

The Guttmacher Institute monitors and analyzes legislation, regulation and judicial action related to state policy developments on pregnancy and pregnancy-related services. This effort is used to prepare monthly updates on new policy developments and the status of state laws and policies.

For nearly 50 years, Roe provided a baseline of legal protection for abortion in the United States. Of course, Roe was never enough. Access to abortion care continues to be dependent on a person’s ability to pay, their state of residence or their ability to navigate the complex web of obstacles created by their state legislature.
