The Guttmacher Institute’s international work on HIV and other STIs focuses on developing regions. Our research and advocacy efforts have focused on the linkages between HIV and sexual and reproductive health and rights, the impact of STIs on maternal and newborn health, the need for new technologies (including multipurpose prevention technologies) and U.S. support for global AIDS programs.

The great advantage of multipurpose prevention technologies is that they approach health challenges from the woman’s perspective. A woman may want to prevent pregnancy and also protect herself against HIV, but right now her only option for doing so—the condom—depends on the cooperation of her male partner. A vaginal ring that dispenses both contraceptive hormones and medication to prevent HIV infection could be a simple, effective solution
