Regions

Northern America

The Guttmacher Institute’s work in Northern America has mostly focused on the United States, with research ranging from such topics as unintended and adolescent pregnancy, contraception and use of publicly funded family planning services, and abortion incidence and funding, to HIV and other STIs, and teens’ and adolescents' access to sex education and reproductive health services. The Institute also analyzes US policies related to sexual and reproductive health and rights, as well as the impact of federally funded programs such as Title X, Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act.

Explore the full range of US-focused work from “Our Work” in main navigation and find state-specific content using the “Select a state” box on this page.

The Unintended Pregnancy and Abortion Worldwide study produced model-based estimates of the incidence of unintended pregnancy and abortion in countries and territories around the world, including Canada and the United States, for the period 1990–2019.

Explore these estimates using the “Select a country profile” box on this page.

It is important to note that the Institute has a separate, extensive body of work around unintended pregnancy and abortion in the United States directly gathered through surveys and interviews. That information may differ in some ways from the model-based estimates of the Unintended Pregnancy and Abortion Worldwide study, which are designed to emphasize comparability across countries and regions.
