Principal Research Scientist

Margaret Giorgio

Portrait of Margaret Giorgio

Margaret Giorgio joined the Institute in 2018 as a Senior Research Scientist and became a Principal Research Scientist in 2026. Margaret is a leader in the field of abortion research, with expertise using several innovative studies designs and methodologies to measure abortion incidence, the experiences of women who have abortions, the quality of abortion care, and the severity of postabortion complications. She has collaborated extensively with local partners to conduct research on several SRHR topics in South Africa, Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Indonesia. She also has experience in program and policy evaluation, conducted using both experimental and quasi-experimental research designs.

Margaret received a Master of Public Health from Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health and a PhD in Public Health from New York University's School of Global Public Health. She received her BA in political science and philosophy from Boston College.
